2020-01-28 16:15:02

[Charania] Kobe Bryant will be a first-ballot enshrinement into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2020. "Expected to be arguably the most epic class ever with Kobe, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett," HOF chairman Jerry Colangelo says. "Kobe will be honored the way he should be."

One of the most painful things about his death was that he wouldn't be there to be enshrined and we wouldn't hear what would have been an epic speech. But maybe we already heard enshrinement speech; maybe Dear Basketball is the perfect speech for that moment.

I thought about people talking about him but it would never end lol. The list of people who would like to say something about him is endless pretty much. Shaq, Phil Jackson, Pau, Duncan, LeBron, MJ maybe, AI... And many more

[–]Nbaslamindub 319

I think if they narrow it down to one person, it should be Jerry West if he's up for it. He was there day 1 for Kobe and believed in him since before he was drafted. He can pass the logo torch to him posthumously and it would be the greatest thing they could do for him after enshrining him in the HoF

We're just so used to seeing all the greats grow old and enjoy retirement having a good time, pursuing other careers, becoming executives, coaches, etc. Jerry West, Kareem, Bill Russell, Magic, Bird, Jordan, Shaq, Barkley, on and on and on. We had been taking it for granted.

He had so much in front of him still.

Kobe was still so present, too. Like, some NBA stars retire and just leave the spotlight, become more private citizens, and we kind of put them out of our minds a bit, and maybe that softens the blow a little if a tragedy like this happens. But Kobe was everywhere, winning an Oscar, sitting courtside at games, going on Kimmel, mentoring young players, his daughter, planning to do all sorts of things in his post-playing career, and then this happens, and the thought that we won't have more of those moments is just crushing.

Crazy to think that his post NBA career could've been even better than his actual career. That just doesn't happen. He seemed to enjoy retirement way more than I would've ever imagined. I would've thought he would've been the type of player that just couldn't hang it up because he was so dominate for so long. But he took retirement as a new challenge to do different things and he was already incredible and successful at all those things.

I almost cry every time I see him smiling in pictures with his daughters/family because you can tell how genuinely much he is enjoying it. Now it's taken away and it sucks.

I grew up hating that man because he was the one guy that was the biggest barrier to us winning more championships, but I respected the hell out of his game, and more from him as a person the more I learned about him, and realized how complex of a person he was. A guy not only insanely gifted with athleticism and smarts, but with the drive to actualize his gifts into success. He's the type of person I aspire to be, someone with drive and determination, and someone who gives it his all no matter the circumstances. His loss cut me deep, I'm still tearing up about it. I can't imagine how all you Lakers fans who idolized him from the beginning are hurting.

I always imagined these guys dying when were all in our 75+ age group and being said but at ease they lived a full life.

Kobe spent his entire life almost on the court, he never got to enjoy his family or the fruit of all his labour and it kills me.

I work 9-5 and I treasure coming home to my family, he never really got to do that.

That's what hurts the most. There's so many players that retire, then either escape the spotlight and do nothing of note, or find their way to becoming a talking head on TV just to stay relevant. Not only did Kobe continue to be relevant outside of basketball, he was actually GROWING as a person, businessman, ambassador of the game, and mentoring both current and future NBA player.

Kobe's Lakers and Duncan's Spurs were the two most dominant teams of the 2000s and one of the greatest rivalries of all time. Each one pushed the other and helped shape their greatness. They deserve to go in together.

Duncan was crying all yesterday on the bench. I felt so bad for him, he lost his greatest rival. They both constantly pushed each other in those decades and it was beautiful to watch. Both of their careers just seemed so seamlessly intertwined, it felt like them getting into the HOF together was the final seal to that.

This just feels all wrong. All of it.

And I just wanna say, even though there are way more things to be upset about and this is basically nothing:

I feel really bad for Duncan and Garnett.

This was suppose to be THEIR night! To relive great moments with friends and colleagues. To give us amazing speeches about their career and futures.

And now they gotta dial it back. Probably focus on the horror of one of their own, who they played against for YEARS, getting inducted with them because he died in an avoidable tragedy.

This sucks. And the more stuff that comes out makes it even worse as time goes on.

I really hope they don’t make it a Kobe show the whole ceremony. This shouldn’t Be an insult to Kobe at all. Kobe can have a very touching and even long tribute but they need to give Duncan and Garnett a night they deserve as well. If they want two different ceremonies that should Be in consideration.

If the induction was tomorrow, that would be a worry. But it won't be for months. By then, the shock of Kobe's death will have faded.
